JOSEPH S. YOUNG (2), US. 204238, Self-Unloading Bulk Freighter. Built 1907 by Great Lakes Engineering
Works, Ecourse, MI (Hull # 28). Launched June 1, 1907 as the straight decker a) WILPEN for Shenango
Furnace Co., Pittsburgh. 579' X 58' X 32'; 7612 grt. Powered by a 1,800 hp triple expansion steam engine.
Sold to Pioneer S.S. Co. in 1926 and renamed b) DAVID P. THOMPSON in 1927. Converted to a
self-unloader in 1957 by Fraser-Nelson S.B. Co., at Superior, WI. Repowered in 1959 with a 4,220 hp three
cylinder Skinner Unaflow steam engine and two water tube boilers. Sold to American S.S. in 1961 and
renamed c) JOSEPH S. YOUNG in 1969. Laid up in Toledo in 1977. Sold for scrap in 1979 and departed
Quebec City in tow of the West German tug HANSEAT September 10th for Italian ship breakers.
