Wasn't there a place on 7 Mile near I-75 in Detroit that handled specialized woods. I haven't been there in years, but I do remember they had blocks of basswood that were good for carving ship model hulls, wasn't cheap, but did the job. Gelutung (spelling?) was another less expesive alterative, good for carving and not as much $$$ as basswood. I am not sure if this place is still there, but maybe someone will know more about it....
